Google Goggled? You may recall that back in June / July I was having some problems getting my mobile disco and entertainment agency website listed on Google. It struck me that if I couldn't even get that site listed, Google might not be all its cracked up to be.
Google is still the most important search engine on the Net. For a very high percentage of people looking for information on the Net, Google is the place where they start. I am one of those people and have been since the very early days of Google. But with that popularity comes a certain responsibility, a need to think through how your actions may effect a large number of people.
This comes into play when Google alters the algorithm used to rank search results. An article over at dive into mark yesterday discussed the counter measures Google has taken to combat Google Bombing and sites that sell adverts on the basis their Google Page Ranking, and the effect these measures had on "innocent" websites.
Mark points out: "Unfortunately, the algorithm tweaks necessary to stop these two techniques have caused a wide range of collateral damage, apparently coming down hardest on medium-to-large sites that had previously been doing everything right (as far as page structure, link structure, accessibility, and general honest hard work putting together a usable and useful site)."
Well worth reading if you partake in the regular Google dance for popularity.
